NDRC: China's emission reduction target before 2020 will not change

Xie Zhenhua, vice chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission, said in Warsaw, Poland, on November 18 that China's emissions reduction targets until 2020 would not change.

In 2009, the Chinese government announced that by 2020, carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP would be reduced by 40% to 45% compared to 2005. Earlier, the Japanese government announced that it would reduce emissions by 3.8% in 2020 compared to 2005 levels. The adjusted target is equivalent to an increase of 3.1 per cent over 1990 levels. This is a far cry from the previous pledge to reduce emissions by 25% from 1990 levels.
